Michelin Star 47. Was Chez TJ as good as Single Thread, Madcap, Benu, and Atelier Crenn? No, but Madcap is the only one with one Michelin star; the other three have three Michelin stars each. I enjoyed my fine dining experience here regardless. The only downside was my dining companion - a pompous know-it-all - who was actually totally ignorant about fine dining. When the little starters arrived on uncooked black beans in a bowl, he thought that he was getting an entire bowl of cooked black beans to eat at a Michelin star restaurant! What Michelin restaurant serves portion sizes such as an entire bowl of anything ever? Even the soup comes in a tiny cup that fits a tablespoon, or a couple of tablespoons, of soup, at most.
Phenomenally experience here, highly recommend. Chez TJ has just renewed their Michelin star and does not disappoint. From the moment you walk in, you are completely taken care of and begin a fantastic blind tasting experience. From the little table for your bag to the timing and alignment of the plates on your table, everything looks put together. The food is also amazing and there are so many courses. The seafood courses were full of flavor, the duck and wagyu were cooked to perfection, and the desserts did not disappoint.
We had our wedding anniversary dinner here. It was a blasting experience and the food and services have been amazing. Highly recommend!
Oh gosh this was a fun experience. Really enjoyed it and their new chef, Stan, and there was a bit of room for improvement, judging it at the highest standard. This is a delayed review -- we were there in January on Stan's very first night of service, which was also a unique adventure for all. He came out to the table and greeted us, and he was just the nicest. Enjoyed geeking out about food with him and excited to see where he takes things. I've shared the menus, so I'll just touch on the highlights of the meal. The game bird entree portion was amazing and paired so well with the wine. The paso vino cheese was incredible. East component was really unique and interesting. There was one wine that tasted so heavily of magnolia, I felt like I was back in my hometown in the South. The desserts were so off the wall, too. Risks about, and it pays off. A very fun experience. There was an uni component that also was just expertly paired with the wine. As for improvement, their somm seemed a little... off that night, maybe? Maybe nervous? Not sure. His pairings were stellar, but something in his service there was a little lacking. Again, judging this place to the highest degree. Excited to hear that they'll be experimenting with other price points. Might end up back at some point, but for now, that night will definitely live in my memory :)
Living on the Peninsula all my life, has jaded me from seeking out Michelin starred restaurants except only on anniversaries and milestone birthdays. So, on my 28th Anniversary (one that is usually forgotten), I made a reservation for my husband and I at Chef TJ's. Here is a case of fine dining on the Peninsula that I have been remiss in experiencing. To atone, I will write a review which I hope will prod others into trying a place that has been around forever, is Michelin starred and is a unique, exquisite, and flavorful without the pretension of trying too hard. Chez TJ's offers one contemporary French, six course tasting menu, and the reasonable price of $125. They also have a weeknight four course menu at a lesser price. After dinner there on Saturday, I am looking forward to trying their weeknight offering. The dinner we had included food so delectable and fresh, I was surprised and delighted. Stan Michalski (an alumni of Quince) is the Executive Chef. His discernment and acumen are perfect for the space and audience. I anticipate only progress of the precision of his palette. From amuse bouche to entrée, Chef Michalski's courses were so flavorful and exquisitely presented that for a moment Iwas not looking out onto a street in Mountain View but transported to a restaurant in Napa or SF. The Australian Wagyu course was luxuriant and flavorful with a broth to meld the meat flavors together. Heavenly! Christine Johansen is the Pastry Chef. At a time when most restaurants are cutting back on even having a Pastry Chef, Ms. Johansen is a well-acknowledged addition. The delightful strawberry cheesecake dessert was so fragrant with fresh strawberries that it really knocked me out when it was set in front of me. And the additional chocolate and ice cream pastry course particularly welcome to my husband--a lover of rich desserts. Go to Chef TJ's and try them on any occasion. You will not be disappointed, and you will also skip a drive to SF or Napa.
We went here for Valentine's Day, and could not have been more impressed. A cute home converted into an upscale restaurant made for a romantic homie ambience. Service is formal and attentive. The menu was an inventive journey of courses which they made vegetarian for me.
A little cute house in downtown Mountain View. Looks very cozy from outside. This is my second time going there. This time we had Stan the new chef who started in January this year. Chef is very stiff and no personality towards customers, he showed up at our table for the first course (out of 6) and said something about the dish in a monotone voice, or maybe he was tired at 6:30pm? Who knows? Staffs are everywhere, friendly, typical of high end restaurant, attentive, and explained everything. Food is great with one exception of the beef that I thought didn't go too well with the green sauce.
Had a lovely birthday dinner for my dear friend here. As expected at a Michelin restaurant, the service was excellent and the food tasty. When dining here your only option is the chef tasting menu localized based on what is in season- we were here on a winter's evening. Since we were celebrating, they provided us with an extra dessert and the red carpet treatment. The main course venison was the star of the show and we upgraded to truffle risotto which was divine. Another favorite dish was the rabbit. The desserts were also exceptional. Didn't quite get to 5 stars as the service was at times slower than it needed to be, and not all the courses blew us away but we had an amazing experience here and would highly recommend for a special occasion if you have the means.
Amazing service, delicious food. 2.5 hours for tasting menu. Supplements: truffle risotto and wagyu steak
